Transforming Lives: SocialBox.biz and Age UK Islington Support Isolated Senior
A gentleman in his 80s, supported by Age UK Islington, faced profound isolation. Vision impairment and health issues made his phone unusable for video calls, cutting him off from family overseas. Limited mobility further restricted his access to services. SocialBox.biz, partnering with Age UK Islington, provided a reused  laptop with open spruce software innovation tailored for accessibility. Its larger screen enabled clear video chats, reconnecting him with loved ones and opening doors to online resources.

Age UK Islington Update 23rd September 2025: “Thank you for the opportunity to be able to share these with clients who as a result have found improved social contact, increased their prospects for employment, improve their language skills and better manage health conditions.”

These are case studies from the last batch:

Case Study 1: Reconnecting with family overseas
The client: A gentleman in his 80s who was socially very isolated and struggled with poor vision and complex health issues that made it difficult to leave his home. He found his small phone screen unusable for video calls, leaving him cut off from his family living overseas.
The intervention: SocialBox.biz, in collaboration with Age UK Islington, provided a larger laptop. The device was equipped with accessibility features, including a bigger, clearer screen and easy-to-use open-source software, making video chatting more manageable.
The outcome: The client can now see and speak with his family via video chat, drastically improving his social contact and mental well-being. The laptop has become a lifeline, reducing the profound isolation he was experiencing.
Case Study 2: Improving language skills for health and well-being

The intervention: A SocialBox.biz laptop was provided, giving the client a dedicated tool for their studies. The device was set up to allow the client to attend online lessons, watch English media, and practice their language skills in a focused environment.
The outcome: With the laptop, the client has been able to fully engage with their ESOL course. Their language skills are rapidly improving, which has significantly boosted their confidence and overall well-being. They are also using the laptop to explore English media, further accelerating their learning.
Case Study 3: Empowering a student with poor memory
The client: A student who needs to study at home but struggles with a poor memory, making it difficult to retain information from in-person lessons. This was hindering their progress and causing significant frustration.
The intervention: SocialBox.biz provided a reused laptop to the client. This enabled the student to access online learning resources and watch recorded lessons and media at their own pace, with the ability to pause, rewind, and re-watch as needed.
The outcome: The client now has the tools to reinforce their learning effectively. They can revisit difficult concepts whenever they need to, leading to improved memory retention and academic performance. The laptop has helped them overcome a major obstacle to their education.
Case Study 4: Reconnecting after job loss
The client: An individual who lost their job and, as a result, lost contact with former colleagues and friends. This led to a state of severe social isolation, as people didn’t know how to relate to their new circumstances.
The intervention: A reused SocialBox.biz device helped the client re-establish connections. It provided a platform to use email and social media to reach out to old contacts and gave them the means to find and join support groups and online communities.
The outcome: Having the device has been a crucial step toward recovery. The client has begun to reconnect with their social network and is actively participating in support groups, helping to rebuild their confidence and sense of belonging.
Case Study 5: Pathway to employment
The client: An unemployed individual who lacked the necessary digital tools to search for work online, register for courses, or communicate with potential employers and support agencies. This hindered their job search and eroded their self-esteem.

The outcome: The client is now much more active and effective in their job search. The ability to manage applications, communicate with agencies, and pursue further education online has built their confidence and self-esteem, making them more resilient and hopeful for the future.
Case Study 6: Managing health conditions effectively
